Post-Operative Instructions for Otoplasty
After Surgery:
• Take all prescribed medications exactly as directed.
• Wear the headband or surgical dressing continuously as instructed by your surgeon. Do not remove it until advised.
• After the dressing is removed, you may be instructed to wear the headband while sleeping for several weeks to protect your ears.
• Sleep on your back with your head slightly elevated. Avoid sleeping on your sides or putting pressure on your ears.
• Keep the incision clean and dry, and change dressings as directed.
• Avoid touching, bending, or putting pressure on your ears.
• Avoid strenuous exercise or activities that may injure your ears for 4–6 weeks.
• Avoid smoking and nicotine products for 4–6 weeks.
• Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments.
It Is Normal to Experience:
• Swelling and bruising around the ears.
• Mild pain or tightness during the first few days.
• Temporary numbness or reduced sensation.
• Mild itching as the incision heals.
Contact Your Surgeon Immediately If You Experience:
• Fever.
• Heavy bleeding or sudden increase in swelling.
• Yellow discharge or foul-smelling drainage from the incision.
• Severe pain that is not relieved by prescribed medication.
• Significant redness or warmth around the ear.
• Separation of the incision or opening of the stitches.
Most swelling subsides within 2–4 weeks, while the final results gradually become apparent over 2–3 months. Wearing the recommended headband and protecting your ears from pressure or injury will help preserve your results and promote optimal healing.
